On Sunday 26 November 2023, I went along to the Dickensian Christmas Fair, held in the North Norfolk coastal resort of Hunstanton. I went in my ‘apple woman’ costume. On the bus! Mum and I had a great time looking at all the stalls, and I made sure to curtsey to the gentry (a few folk were dressed in very fancy Victorian outfits) and stay out of the way of the ‘bobby’ or policeman. I filled my basket with apples kindly loaned by Kemps Greengrocer, and gained even more respect for the physical strength and stamina of a Victorian costermonger (fruit and veg seller) as I lugged the basket around town. Radio KL1 were kind enough to interview me about the East of England Apples and Orchards Project, and the ‘world-famous’ Pomological Personality Picker. And then we got back on the bus home. But this costume is so much fun to wear, I will have to give it another outing soon.
